Magic Mushrooms: When to go Big!

Magic mushrooms have been used for medicinal and ceremonial purposes throughout human history. But what are the benefits of consuming magic mushrooms? In recent years there’s been a well documented ground-swell, in the practice of microdosing, but some believe there are greater benefits to be had by taking larger doses of Psilocybin.

The numerous benefits of consuming magic mushrooms are well documented. From improved focus, creativity, mood, and energy, to the many emotional, spiritual and mental health benefits such as reduced anxiety, and the increased feeling of connectedness to nature and others, there’s no arguing the upside of having psychedelics in your life. But there continues to be some debate as to the “correct” way to use magic mushrooms -namely, medicinal use vs recreational use …or the practice of taking smaller, microdoses vs that of larger doses that can cause heavy,  psychedelic effects. 

Recreational, macrodose, use, typically refers to taking magic mushrooms in higher quantities (1g and up) with the intent to ‘trip’. Most often used for camping, natural outings, concerts, parties or to experience a personal, spiritual journey, taking higher doses often come with risks, as trips can last many hours. At higher doses, less experienced users should expect some amount of unpredictability, meaning users may not be able to accurately gauge the impact their dosage is having on them until it is too late. It is important to remember that the experiences gained from macrodosing can be very varied and unpredictable. In fact, it is generally recommended that users prepare for a psychedelic experience by having a safe place to stay and with friends or people they trust around them. 

Macrodosing can lead to both profound insights as well as an increased chance of having a “bad trip” so proceed cautiously! 

Alternately, many of the positive benefits mentioned above, can also be had without taking doses high enough to cause a psychedelic experience. Microdosing (typically 50mg-100mg per dose) allows people to achieve these mental and physical improvements safely and in a manner that may be more comfortable or suitable to their lifestyle. While taking smaller, imperceivable amounts of psilocybin can sometimes leave people wondering if magic mushrooms are actually having any effect at all, but rest assured that the many medicinal benefits are quietly working behind the scenes. While taking smaller and more frequent doses may be more comfortable and offer more control, the smaller amounts likely won’t necessarily be enough to break down the mental barriers to achieve profound, personal insight. 

Whichever method you choose, be sure to be mindful of the effects. Luckily, there is little evidence that magic mushrooms consumed in concentrated amounts can cause serious bodily harm, nor that using magic mushrooms can become addictive, but larger, heavier trips can get uncomfortable if pushed too far.
